The Good Place 3x11 "The Book of Dougs" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
I just found out this show came back and watched the latest episode yesterday. Yay! Wow! We’re inside the actual Good Place and meeting these wonderfully nice characters. Gwendolyn (Nicole Byer), mail room employee, was a great character to have around. She delivered her lines was killing me with kindness in the best way possible. Yes, let us talk about the game-changing episode. This was their best episode in a while.
We learned the point system wasn’t corrupted after all. The Bad Place didn’t need to do anything to the system. As perfectly said by Michael (Ted Danson), “Everyday the world gets a little more complicated and being a good person becomes harder.” I needed to hear that. I like to think I’m a good person, but now I’m really questioning what that means.
The stories of Douglas Wynegarr (year 1538) and Doug Ewing (2009) acknowledged how complicated the world has gotten with gifting a dozen flowers. They didn’t make us feel guilty either; they were just being genuinely honest about the situation. It was also setting up their endgame with such a great pace that it was hard to care about the stories… even though THOSE HAD GREAT WRITING TOO. A reward of its own for surviving all those reboots of the neighborhood.
Kristen Bell nailed her happy breakdown scene. Eleanor can’t handle all the positivity she was feeling and her love for Chidi fully realized. The power of that scene was incredible. Chidi is also sporting a new mail carrier outfit and will continue to wear it for next week’s episode. But yes, Eleanor and Chidi are officially together and had sex. That’s awesome!
Jason and Tahani are a joy too. The “Death Did Us Part” certificate scene was a hoot, and Janet continues to excel. The writing for Janet and character development is probably the best one out of the entire cast. D’Arcy Carden is getting more emotions to work with and that “end of discussion” was delivered with great fierceness.
All the stories have been equally well-rounded by resolving / setting up the plot points.
Overall, I enjoyed this episode a lot. I’d rank it high up on my list of favorite episodes. Next week, Michael and the Soul Squad are going to IHOP (Inter-dimensional Hole of Pancakes) to speak to The Judge again about the flawed point system. We’re in the endgame now . Yes, I read that with my Doctor Strange voice too.
We only have a few episodes left in the season. See you next week!
