Supernatural 13x21 "Beat the Devil" Episode Review
Shit hit the fan in the latest Supernatural episode. All the major characters (Sam, Dean, Cass, Gabriel, and Rowena) have gathered together to open the rift. It took awhile to get Gabriel and Rowena on board because they had their own figurative demons to deal with (my reviews on their episodic struggles are here and here respectively), but now the ingredients have been assembled.
Spoilers moving forward into Apocalypse World:
Everyone waits in the bunker. Sam dreams about Jack and Mary being home with them. He has been dreaming about them nonstop he tells Dean later in the episode. Gabriel is extracting his grace "privately" in Dean's room. The sexual innuendos are wonderful. How we've missed you Gabriel!
But once they discover his archangel grace is not "adequate" enough, Castiel declares they need to recruit Lucifer to the cause. Sam refuses to team up with the devil again because they keep getting screwed over. True, but like any other situation, they have no other alternative. It'll take too long for Gabriel to recharge, and Lucifer is the only available archangel.
While the boys debate, Gabriel and Rowena are left in the room alone. They get to bantering and one thing leads to another... Yes they have sex. There was no way around that. But when the boys return to find them, another level of awkwardness develops.
Sam does not want to team up with Lucifer but has another plan for the devil.
Lucifer has left Heaven. He did abandon it and finds no other reason to keep living. This is where his former victims return to haunt him. Except they're not haunting because Gabriel and Rowena are alive. He is confused and weakened from his spiked drink.
Yes, the last time he seen his younger brother and Rowena was when he murdered them both back in season 5 and season 12 respectively. Poor archangel can't catch a break. They bind Lucifer and slit his throat to get his grace but keep his wound open to power the spell. This will keep the rift open for more than 24 hours. What a genius plan.
Rowena stays behind to ensure nothing goes wrong with the spell and Lucifer while the boys plus Gabriel head to Apocalypse World. They land awkwardly on top of each other, Gabriel meeting face first with Castiel's crotch, but they move past it to go find Mary and Jack.
During the trip, Castiel and Gabriel get to talking about Heaven's situation. If you recall, the angels are in trouble with their numbers and their home crumbling. Gabriel is reluctant to help because he's a screwed up, but Castiel says maybe they need a screw up to lead the rest of them.
The boys find a man and young woman getting attacked by hungry vampires. They take care of them and get updated on what happened to the monsters in this world. Since the angels took out most of their food (humans), the monsters grew hungry and starved.
This group is also heading to Jack and Mary because they are the safest place. Everyone except Gabriel decides to go through the tunnel where all the vampires are because it is the quickest way. I agreed with Gabriel to go the long way, but we need some conflict here.
The vampires predictably attack the group and kill the man. I assumed this would happen, but I did not expect Sam to get caught in the crossfire too. I mean, I figured they would try to pull another Winchester death, but not this soon.
They rip into Sam's throat, a blast of blood coming out, and he is dragged away. Dean cries his signature "Sammy!" and tries to go after him, but Castiel stops him. It's too late to save his brother, and Dean cries for the millionth time for his brother dying.
My theories blasted off from there. How will Sam get resurrected this time around? Will Dean make a deal with Alt. Michael? Is Sam even dead? Will he turn into a vampire? The situation is resolved but through the simplest way. I'll get to that later.
The young woman tries to comfort Dean, but she is not equipped to help Dean with a Winchester death. She is not prepared at all. He ignores her and carries onward to rescue Mary and Jack. They are all reunited, but when Mary asks about Sam, Dean sheds a tear and tells her what happened on the way.
Back in the main world, Rowena is keeping Lucifer at bay, but after his annoying singing gets to her, she taunts him about Jack having three fathers, but he is not one of them. Little did she know getting him angry powered him up. He breaks free and tries to kill Rowena again, intending to go after his son in the other world.
Rowena blasts Lucifer through the rift and without his grace, the portal will eventually close. She packs her bags and decides to leave them like a classic villain. But her inner Crowley gets the better of her, and she searches for another way to keep the rift open without Lucifer's archangel grace.
Lucifer travels through the tunnel and RESURRECTS Sam. Yes, the devil brought Sam back to life. Sam does not want to team up with Lucifer, he has made this clear earlier, but he has no other choice with hungry vampires waiting to eat him. Only Lucifer's presence is keeping them at bay.
Sam decides to go along with Lucifer, who simply wants a relationship with his son. He knows if he brings Sam alive, he will be somewhat welcomed. So, the two of them arrive at the camp, as Lucifer greets his distraught son (distraught thinking Sam died, not about Lucifer).
It took 21 episodes, but Lucifer has finally met Jack.
I think this episode was a strong one considering we're going to spend all our time in Apocalypse World hopefully for the rest of the season. I did not like how they used Sam's death to move Lucifer's character forward. They could've found other ways to get Lucifer on their good side, but they chose to kill Sam because it was probably the easiest way to do it.
Killing Sam or Dean is not even a big deal anymore after 13 seasons. Does death even matter? I mean, Lucifer reunited with a lot of his victims this season, hell this episode! Castiel, Gabriel, and Rowena... welcome to Supernatural.
Let me know your thoughts in the comment section. Overall, I did enjoy the episode with Gabriel-Rowena hookup, Lucifer's return to his original purpose (fatherhood), and the boys reuniting with Jack and Mary. FINALLY!
If you watch Arrow as well, my review on the latest episode is here.
