Grey's Anatomy 14x22 "Fight For Your Mind" Review
Alright Grey's Fans. We have a lot of ground to cover here. We're two episodes away from the season finale and lots to speculate about: especially the fates of Arizona Robbins and April Kepner. Cherish that friendship and those characters while you still can. After this season, they are no longer going to be with us.
Spoilers ahead:
I want to start with Alex Karev and Jo Wilson. Last week, we learned his mother had stopped cashing in his checks. He and the rest of us assumed the worst has happened. He and Jo drive down to her house and ask around. Turns out it's worse than we imagined...
SHE HAS A JOB. The horror!
Mama Karev is a librarian and has gotten herself a routine. The only way to keep her schizophrenia in check. This frustrates Alex because in his head, it's too late. He had to manage her and take care of his siblings, but he can't confront her about this because she almost lost control being normal douche bag Alex.
Jo takes her man to the batting cages and after hitting a couple balls, Alex calms down and tells his mother how he feels: he is so damn happy for her. He takes his mama to meet Jo and they invite her to the wedding. She can't travel due to her condition, but I think Jo and Alex are gonna plan to bring the love to her. That's my theory.
Meredith is going through something on her own. She is supposed to present her mini-livers for the Catherine Fox Foundation (Yes! I love it this so much), but when she spots Marie, Meredith goes to Joe's for coffee.
There, she meets someone who became a nobody after Meredith beat him on the same surgery he planned for a year. Wow awkward. But they get to talking for some reason, and Meredith learns to do the right thing. She goes to her presentation but declares first that Marie helped Ellis create the Grey Method to a stunned audience.
She requests the Grey Method be renamed the Grey-Cerone Method to make things right for what Harper Avery denied Marie. The guy gives Meredith a nod of approval, and Meredith proceeds with the presentation. Aunt Marie tries to thank her, but Meredith is still angry with her about trying to steal her invention.
While what Harper Avery did to Marie was wrong, it does not justify her horrible threat to steal Meredith's invention. Damn straight it doesn't.
Amelia is with Betty, the girl she took in with Owen. Well, she's doing this alone, but Owen might as well be involved too. Betty is detoxing and lashing out at Amelia, but Amelia knows its only a demon trying to push her away.
My mind went straight to Amelia's past on Private Practice when she said horrible things to Addison Montgomery. Addison would be so proud of her ex-sister-in-law if she was willing to return for her.
Betty ultimately goes out a window to get high somewhere else or something. Amelia never finds her but ends up at a meeting herself, sharing her fears about herself and Betty.
Bailey and Richard handle the intern Roy situation: the intern who got fired for eating weed cookie and hid it intentionally to score surgeries. They interview other interns, attendings, and try to figure out a solution to this mess.
Richard believes he may have jumped the gun and reflects on his own alcoholism. But Bailey shuts that down saying this is not about him. Scary Bailey is back people! She ultimately lets Roy back on but on her terms, which Roy views as an apology.
I think they were right to fire the guy, but I'm glad this didn't drag out compared to the DeLuca and Alex trial during season 13.
Arizona, Maggie, and DeLuca are helping a patient who is too scared of surgery. She needs it to help her baby. If she doesn't get the surgery for her unborn child, it might get born with paralysis. When the patient ultimately goes home, Arizona visits her home and shares her own tragedy about losing her leg.
Season 8/9 feels returned in this moment of vulnerability. And her love for skating! Her absence will be felt next season.
This convinces the patient to do the surgery, a rather graphic one, and everything goes well. The woman had nothing to worry about.
But this pushes Arizona to push Carina away and to do what's best for her daughter. Sofia is acting out because she misses New York and got suspended from school for stealing money.
Arizona calls Callie and tells her she's moving to New York with Sofia. I don't like this, but I guess their hands are tied. Seeing Arizona deal with that patient and how much energy she brings to the character, I'm honestly amazed they cannot find another story line for Arizona.
Bullshit! I'm gonna miss her so much. But hopefully she does not need to die. Grey's Anatomy has a bad habit of killing off our beloved characters thinking it's a beautiful sendoff for those who wish to move on to better things.
Comment below on your thoughts. I neglected April in this review because of what's coming in next week's promo. I'll talk about her then.
If you also watch Station 19, my review on the latest episode is here.
