Marvel’s Agents of Shield 5x22 "The End" Episode Review
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE EPISODE BELOW! CAUTION!
Agents of Shield is renewed for a sixth season! This isn't "The End"! A huge relief for us hard-core fans who stayed true to this show for the past five seasons. While everyone is assured this is treated like a series finale and while it does possess closure, there are also open possibilities for more storytelling.
Everything relating to the end of the world is resolved by season's end, but no further mention of Infinity War is made. I think this is best to preserve the show in case they didn't get renewed and dealing with ramifications from the movie wouldn't have helped matters.
This is our goodbye to Phil Coulson. The team has a decision to make: save him or the world using the centipede serum. He is excluded on this matter but admits he would've sided with Yo-Yo. She wants to use the serum to save the world: to let Coulson die.
May takes things into her hands and destroy the odium. The component needed to merge with the centipede serum to save the world: stop Graviton (Glenn Talbot). FitzSimmons work on the cure, but Yo-Yo is broken, thinking this is the end of the world.
The cure is completed, but Coulson refuses to take the cure. He encourages Daisy to take on Talbot alone. She thinks she will cause the end of the world, but Coulson believes in her. Daisy Johnson has come a long way from girl who lived in her van to the Destroyer of Worlds.
Without her knowledge, Coulson slipped her the centipede serum before she takes off to face Graviton in Chicago. He went there to retrieve more gravitonium and is keeping Robin and her mother inside his spaceship. The rest of SHIELD is saving everyone who's getting caught in the crossfire.
This is all happening while Thanos is invading Earth. Poor Planet Earth. The Avengers can't be everywhere.
Daisy confronts Graviton and all the budget-money goes to these quaking earth scenes. It's like watching a movie. She tries to get through to his humanity, but the man is too far gone. Then he overpowers her and tries to absorb her to gain more power.
This is where history changes.
She injects herself with the centipede serum and gets a major power boost. Graviton is unable to take her, and Daisy blasts him hard enough into outer space. He suffocates up there and dies. His reign of terror is over. I'm going to miss you, Glenn Talbot.
May, Mack, Fitz, and Yo-Yo go on the rescue mission for Robin and her mother. After saving her mother, tragedy strikes! The future changed but at the cost of losing one of their own. My heart shattered seeing Fitz get trapped under the rumble.
It was like Arrow season 1 finale all over again. RIP FITZ! Mack comforted his friend in his dying moments, who had no idea he was dying for a bit. May and Yo-Yo helplessly watched. I have no idea how Jemma was going to handle this!
The celebratory toast in honor of Fitz hit hard. Coulson lead the charge and tried to keep the mood upbeat and when he said he regretted not being able to say goodbye to Fitz; my tears got put on hold. The rug is pulled out from underneath us.
Jemma confirms Fitz is alive out there. That's right. He is frozen somewhere in space to reach them in the future. The timeloop is broken so they can find him and wake him up. This is going to be a different Fitz, but it means he has a chance for redemption and a bunch of other storytelling.
They don't mention Deke after he left to explore the world. I hope he didn't blink out of existence because... that would suck.
The toast is about Phil Coulson. He is dying and retiring to live out the rest of his days in peace. May joins him in Tahiti, a truly wonderful place while Mack leads the rest of SHIELD on missions to save the world.
The show came full circle, but Phil Coulson's fight isn't over yet! The show will return and our heroes have more threats to combat next summer. After they have Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 under their belt, the show will have a lot to bounce off from.
I'm sure Phil Coulson will find a way to save himself for the sixth season. Hopefully... we need him around. Mack and Daisy are good leaders, but Coulson is the true director. He Is the SHIELD.
Comment and let us know how we're feeling. I'm excited for season six!
