The Flash 4x20 "Therefore She Is" Review
Tonight's episode gave us a DeVoe flashback centered around love and incredible insight into his Enlightenment Plan. The one he's been working on this entire season but we as an audience knew virtually nothing about until now.
I miss Wentworth Miller FYI. I really do. My review on his last Arrowverse appearance is here if you want to know how I felt about his departure. His performance as Leonard Snart and Leo Snart were both phenomenal in their own unique ways that only Miller could bring to the table. I hope to see him again someday in the Arrowverse.
The Cisco-Gypsy relationship is also explored when she demands an answer about the job offer her father gave him in one of the previous episodes. But enough talk, let's get into it.
Spoilers moving forward:
The episode opens to a flashback to DeVoe's first meeting with his wife Marlize at Oxford University. This leads to a debate about their views on the Enlightenment, which leads to their first date, and how they eventually move in together. It's all very sweet and romantic until Marlize discovers his true intentions.
The Enlightenment is pretty much getting rid of all technology and rebooting the human conscience to simpler times (what Harry Wells is experiencing right now). Team Flash is also updated on Harry's condition.
In the flashback story, Marlize is disgusted about this and leaves him. I'm glad to see she saw his insanity even back then. So, why did she stick around?
Well, she didn't. She left him and went to Kenya to make a difference. DeVoe is a wreck without her and begs her to come home. But she cannot be with someone who believes technology is destroying the world.
Then a deadly explosion occurs and knocks Marlize out. This near-death experience hardens Marlize and convinces her that DeVoe's Enlightenment is the solution to saving the world.
In the present day, DeVoe is raiding all these places to collect items for his machine. Barry and the team is trying to get one step ahead of him. He pushes Cisco to vibe, but knowing what happens when he tries to do that to DeVoe, Cisco refuses.
This is where Gypsy comes in. Barry believes they need to double the strength in order to get pass the vibe problem. Cisco and Gypsy vibe together to locate the next thing DeVoe is after but end up protecting the wrong item.
This comes to a head for the two of them in the relationship. Gypsy does not want Cisco to take the Breacher job on Earth-19, and neither does he. At first, this should be a relief, problem solved. BUT NOPE!
Cisco does not want to keep living this way. Their relationship is the same and can never change, he deserves better. Gypsy understands and they amicably break up with each other. This was inevitable but sad to see happen.
Harry is paired up with Cecille in this episode. She has been absent for awhile but is still pregnant and telepathic. Her ability surprisingly turns out to be helpful when she's able to read and write down Harry's thoughts before they vanish. These two are a joy to have around. Their dynamic needs to be exploited more.
The two of them discover the Enlightenment while Barry figures out DeVoe is building five separate machines that will work with one another. DeVoe plans to dumb the world and become its ruler because he'll be the only smart person left.
Gypsy, Cisco, Caitlin, and Barry go after DeVoe. He and Marlize went to Mercury Labs to steal some technology to complete the machine. Mercury Labs has to stop getting their tech stolen, this cannot be good for business.
DeVoe beats them all and almost kills Gypsy but spares Barry because he has plans for him in the Enlightenment. Caitlin tries to play Captain Cold and uses the Cold Gun to stop DeVoe but is also defeated without Killer Frost manifesting. Yeah, Caitlin is still on that weird quest to reunite with her evil half.
Marlize convinces her husband to spare Gypsy and they depart together.
At the episode's conclusion, Marlize takes DeVoe's chair, finally leaves him because he became a monster, and loses faith in his plan. She is able to put up a forcefield around herself before making her escape. She is going to be DeVoe's downfall for sure.
Joe also throws Cecille a baby shower. Wally got her a bassinet from his time-traveling adventures (nice Legends reference) and the Mystery Girl gives a diaper bag. She is also revealed to be a speedster with purple and gold lightning.
OKAY PEOPLE! WHAT IF MYSTERY GIRL IS JOE AND CECILLE'S DAUGHTER OR GRANDDAUGHTER?!
It seems too obvious that it would be Barry and Iris' daughter. Then she avoids Iris because she hates her or something. Yeah, let's go with the hating her part because that causes drama. I like that a lot. Clearly you can tell I have issues with Iris West-Allen.
I think she's Joe and Cecille's daughter. I think that would be a better twist because Mystery Girl would know her own birthday (21 days until Cecille gives birth!!!). But I'd be okay with her being Barry and Iris' kid or even grandchild.
Comment and let me know if I'm insane or not about this fan theory.
