Station 19 1x07 "Let it Burn" Episode Review
Well. If I had any doubts about Station 19, they have been officially extinguished. I enjoyed this episode immensely and cried for the fire action scene involving a mother and her baby. Andy and her father had the most emotional confrontation yet about his condition, and Ryan has made his intentions clear. Miranda Bailey also made a return for the Grey's Anatomy fans.
Spoilers ahead:
Coming off a lawsuit handed to her in the latest Grey's episode, Miranda runs back into the hospital to meet Chief Herrera. If you recall in last week's episode, he chose to return to the hospital and ask for her help about his progressing cancer. He, however, is not willing to get his daughter involved and leaves without getting admitted.
This prompts Miranda to visit Ben and to warn him about Herrera's stubbornness. Ben discloses this to Dean and they confront the Chief in a private room. He is outraged about their meddling and almost falls. Andy walks in and tags along with them to take her father back to Grey Sloan.
Andy is dealing with her own problems when it comes to the race for Captain and rants about it to Maya. She is not in a good place for the role after her screw up in the previous episode. She does not want pity eyes or any other kind of downer eyes from her team.
This anxiety is pushed to the side when it comes to her father though. Being Captain is the last thing on her mind during this entire episode. She is mad at him for leaving her out of the cancer updates (Glasses made a Grey's cameo in this episode too), and how he wants space. Andy does not want to give him space because he is the only family she's got. And she promised her mom that she'd take care of him.
An emotional scene between father and daughter. Herrera never knew about this promise until now and is clearly moved. I hope we learn more about how Andy's mother dying affected them both later on in this show. Then he crashes and Miranda has to step in. I thought he was a goner because Grey Sloan tends to bring out the death bells in me.
But he survives and is willing to do whatever treatment Miranda thinks is right. As long as Andy continues to stand with him. The two of them are in this together. Please survive this, Chief Herrera. Andy can't lose you... not yet. Neither can we.
At the station, Jack is the Captain because Andy stepped out for her father. Ryan and his partner show up for a drill. The two of them go at each other about the protocol, why he is in charge rather than Andy herself, and indirectly about their romantic feelings for Andy as well. This was a long time coming.
Ryan showed such passion in this episode. I cannot believe they hid this side of him until now. Like where did this come from?
The fire alarm goes off. Both the firefighters and the police officers head off to save the day. Ryan plays hero immediately and runs into the burning restaurant to save people without a mask or any firefighter equipment. Jack criticizes him for putting himself in danger.
Jack stops Ryan from going inside again because the building will not last. It is about to collapse. Everyone backs up and wait. I mean they would've if the woman on the second floor wasn't in danger. The bros decide to do their own thing to save them individually.
The best part about this episode? Ryan asking the woman to THROW her baby down to him so she can jump to Jack once he gets to her using the ladder. She is obviously terrified about such a request, but she knows if she doesn't, death will claim them both.
So she tosses caution and her baby into the air. I WAS FREAKING OUT! I knew he'd catch the baby because the alternative is just too gruesome to think about. Ryan catches the baby and Jack saves the mother before the building gives way. No casualties in this fire.
Three other things are going on as well with Maya, Travis, and Victoria.
Maya is helping her brother who is homeless. He refuses her help and wants to make art in peace. She is stubborn and gives him food, a blanket, and art supplies. Rather than say thank you, her brother bails the homeless bridge but draws a mural in its place for his sister. Not sure what to make of this, but Maya is not giving up on him.
Travis is dealing with a new love. The elderly woman he meets regularly sets him up with her grandson Grant, saying they'd be a good match. Plus Travis and Grant bump into each other at the gym. Victoria is also there and awkwardly plays wing woman. She is also there when the two of them talk about their breakfast date. Grant is not giving up, and Travis eventually gives in despite his reservations about dying in the field. I think Travis is still holding scars from losing his husband.
Now Victoria is dealing with her fear of fire. Maya and Travis help train her overcome it, but Maya pushes her friend too far. Victoria panics and screams at Maya about not being ready for that intensity. After saving the woman and baby though, Victoria steps closer to the burning flames. I swear to God I thought she was going to jump in or something, she got way too close. But it was opposite... she's starting to overcome her fear, and that's a good start.
Warren's role in this episode is similar to Meredith's in the pilot episode. He is helping Andy deal with her father, but he also has to come clean to Miranda about his recent troubles on the station. Herrera disclosed to Miranda about Warren's problems, and this forces a real conversation between them about his dishonesty. He promises to be honest moving forward.
I hope Miranda shows up more often like this because it helps bring connection between the two shows. The whole time watching I kept a lookout for Meredith to find Andy and throw her in that supply room again for her to let it all out. Andy and Meredith's friendship needs to get explored more.
The closing moments in the episode found Andy returning home and Ryan shows up too. After saving that baby in his arms, he is ready to give in to what he wants and kisses Andy. They rip each other's clothes off and get it on with each other on the couch. Yes! I love these two way more than Jack and Andy.
Comment below about the latest episode and your thoughts on what will happen in the remaining three episodes. I like the small crossovers between the shows. Station 19 is becoming one of my favorites.
