Marvel’s Agents of Shield 5x19 "Option Two" Episode Review
I'm not over what happened in last week's episode pertaining to Ruby's death and neither is the rest of the team. LIKE WHY YO-YO?! The potential Ruby possessed for the overall story went to waste. I stand by that and no one can change my mind. But I will admit it does move the narrative forward when it came to the inevitable future.
Spoilers ahead:
Phil consults the team on how to handle the Gravitonium in their possession. They want to chuck it into the sun. Without the substance, the Destroyer of Worlds can no longer exist. The future will change for the better. But this leads to a heated argument about what Yo-Yo did to Ruby Hale.
Yo-Yo believes Ruby was becoming the Destroyer of Worlds and did what she had to do to stop her. Daisy believes Yo-Yo did it out of revenge for what Ruby did to her arms. That's a valid point. FitzSimmons understand her decision but Mack is Team Daisy when it came to what to Yo-Yo did. Mack isn't happy with anyone for how they locked him in a cell.
Coulson shuts down the arguments like a true leader and goes to consult Talbot. The former general is reciting some words to himself, which are revealed to be the coordinates for the Lighthouse. It's the reason why he kidnapped Robin and took her to the control box.
The Aliens are coming to their base for the Gravitonium. Everyone prepares for battle and lock down the Lighthouse. Coulson, of course he did, chooses option two for "nuclear attack" rather than wait for option three "alien invasion". May is angry because you have to wait for all the options to appear on the menu.
Now the whole Lighthouse is locked down for 15 years. The aliens won't get inside but they won't be getting out anytime soon. What a dilemma. The Alien Leader communicates with Coulson about surrendering, but Coulson refuses to hand over the Gravitonium because he'll wait them out. They have food (not good food according to May), water, electricity, and all that to keep them alive for 15 years.
But the SHIELD agents have no idea that the aliens have the same machine that Hale uses, and they teleport them directly inside the Lighthouse. Deke warns the team these aliens have sharp foot-long claws, uses the darkness to hide their presence, and have virtually no weaknesses. His future people gave them whatever they wanted to avoid certain death.
Everyone is having a hard time killing these things, and all hope is lost. But Talbot, wanting to make up for what he did, decides to knock out Jemma and enter the chamber. The same one that drove Ruby into madness. Instead of only taking 8% though, Talbot absorbs 100%!!
He is infused with the Gravitonium. A close up to the box has some of the letters blocked though, leaving the word read as: Graviton. I believe Talbot has taken on that Marvel character's identity moving forward.
Talbot destroys all the alien ninjas and takes Coulson into the sky with him. These two characters are a serious bromance. I love the journey they've been on since the first season. I'm excited to see how this new development will affect Talbot moving forward. It was an effective twist hidden well in the red-herring known as Ruby.
Talbot may become the Destroyer of Worlds and Daisy the Savior.
Speaking of Daisy, she is off-mission trying to find a way to save Coulson's life. An act Yo-Yo reveals will cause the end of the world. According to her future self anyway. May refuses to believe that, but Coulson doesn't care because he does not want to get saved anyway.
Daisy meets with Mack's old friend Tony and get talking about the "weird stuff happening in New York?" This is a clear Avengers: Infinity Wars reference, one Daisy does not indulge in because it gives her a headache. So this invasion on the small screen is happening simultaneously with Thanos collecting the Infinity Stones.
NO SPOILERS ON THAT MOVIE BY THE WAY. I HAVE NOT SEEN IT YET!
Back to the review. Tony gives her the centipede serum. What a season one throwback! The last one remaining. Daisy plans to use it to save Coulson, but Tony warns her it is missing a key ingredient. He couldn't figure out what the word meant and shows it to Daisy, who recognizes it right away... because it's her mother Jiaying!
This leads Daisy to her mother's grave and she starts digging her body out for the answers she needs to saving Coulson.
Agents of SHIELD is still going strong. I am ready to see the fallout of Talbot's ascension to the Destroyer of Worlds and how he will deal with the Alien Invaders moving forward. I wonder if Quinn and Whitehall are also in Talbot's head as well. If only a touch and 8% drove Creel and Ruby close to insanity, I can't even begin to imagine what it's done to Talbot's already fractured psyche. Good twist but still mad about Ruby.
Fun mentions:
Mack let Coulson use his shotgun axe, Coulson got to use some cliches, and Deke is worried about blinking out of existence. Oh yeah, Yo-Yo still thinks she's invincible, and some random agent has an amazing story about a scar no one cares to hear about except Piper.
