Supernatural 13x20 "Unfinished Business" Episode Review
Alright Supernatural fans! The episode we have waited for since season five and part of season thirteen. How Gabriel managed to stay off the radar for eight seasons and what he did with those porn stars and how Asmodeus got his hands on that archangel grace!
This episode was directed by Richard Speight Jr. who also plays Gabriel and the antagonist Loki. More on that later! Showtime!
Spoilers ahead!
The episode opens to a drunk guy in an alleyway. Gabriel shows up with a katana ready to kill this drunk man without his angel powers. Drunk guy turns out to be some demi-god and they battle it out. I loved the dramatic action sequence in this. The demi-god is killed, but Gabriel is hurt in the process. His grace is still weakened for the time being.
Coming off last week's episode, Rowena decides to help and locates Gabriel to two different locations. Castiel goes to one location, missing out on the action, while Dean and Sam go to the other location where they find Gabriel. They patch him up, kill off more demi-gods who come for him, and they strike a deal.
If Dean and Sam help Gabriel kill these demi-gods, Gabriel must help them save Mary and Jack who are trapped in Apocalypse World. He accepts the deal and tells them about Loki in a steamy flashback sequence. Dean was incredibly into this especially where porn stars were involved.
Long story short: Gabriel sought refugee with Loki and his sons after faking his death. They partied with porn stars and did other things. This gets confusing for the boys as Gabriel told them he was Loki the trickster. But Gabriel only borrowed his appearance and namesake to hide. They owed each other because they helped each other out.
After the massacre Lucifer laid out on his father Odin though, Loki grew resentful and sold Gabriel to Asmodeus, where he suffered until Gabriel took him out. If you wanna read how that went down, my review on that episode is here.
But killing Asmodeus was not enough for him. Gabriel is looking for revenge by killing the sons and then saving Loki for last because that's how his kill list works. Dean and Sam think this is stupid and a waste of time.
Gabriel thinks otherwise and insists on seeing this through. Then they head to the hotel where Loki resides. In an awkward elevator scene, Gabriel makes it clear to the boys that he is the one who will kill Loki. A slow-motion action sequence commences once those elevator doors open. The archangel kills the lights and gunfire is our only way to see the snippets of the fight.
Dean sneaks off though to go fight Loki, who is also played by Richard Speight Jr. I loved this more than I should've. Seeing them go off on each other for their family dramas was definitely entertaining. The Original Trickster gets the upper hand using some rule about Dean being unable to hit him, but he can hit Dean.
After leaving Dean and Sam, Loki goes confront Gabriel. He wants revenge on Gabriel for getting his father killed by his brother back in season five. Loki gains the advantage, but ultimately falls to Gabriel's might. But Gabriel seemed less than satisfied about his success.
Gabriel is clearly holding scars about his imprisonment by Asmodeus and his reluctance to get involved in the first place. Hopefully this gets straightened out by next week's episode because he needs to get ready for Alternate Michael invasion and awkward reunion with Luci.
Speaking about Alternate Michael invasion...
We also see Jack and Mary in this episode. How I missed these two. Jack has become a lot more cocky since we last saw him. He is leading a small team with Mary as his backup calming him down whenever he gets too arrogant about confronting Alt. Michael.
When the duo learns Alt. Michael left his base of operations, they take a team and storm it for any clues to his next move. The team learns the archangel plans to open a rift to another world. Jack wants to face him now, but Mary thinks they need to wait for Alt. Bobby to return and come up with a different strategy.
This is where Alt. Kevin Tran comes. All the soldiers are mad at him for betraying them, but Alt. Kevin is too insane to defend himself. Turns out Alt. Michael left the prophet here on purpose because he is a bomb. Promised heaven and a chance to see his mom again, Kevin detonates and kills everyone except Jack and Mary.
Jack uses his angel wings to protect himself and Mary. He blames himself for what happened to the people, but Mary comforts him. She says she doesn't want to lose another of her boys either. She considers Jack a son! This is so touching! Yay!
Sam and Dean also had a touching moment that threw us back to season five vibes. Instead of the Apocalypse looking for them to say "yes" to the archangels, the boys were now looking for the Apocalypse, and Dean does not want to lose Sam again to it. Brotherly love for the win!
Next week is another trip to the other world. Lucifer is also returning to cause trouble. I don't know what to expect because this season has been uneven especially in this second half. Comment or message and let me know your thoughts on the latest episode.
I need some pie!
