The Originals 5x02 "One Wrong Turn on Bourbon" Episode Review
Welcome back to New Orleans, Klaus Mikaelson. It's been seven years coming for the supernatural community, but we are thrilled for your bloody return. Hope is more than happy to reunite with her father despite the consequences. If you are behind or need to know what happened in last week's premiere, the link to my review is here.
Spoilers ahead:
The episode opens to Hope's last encounter with her father. We get a flashback scene to little Hope (Summer Fontana) doing an astral projection spell to go surprise Klaus. When she arrives however, she witnesses him in all his glory ripping hearts out. She calls out his name, only for Klaus to scream in her face.
This is the reason Klaus had avoided speaking to her on the phone or through magic in the past five years. We'll get into that emotional baggage later...
Klaus returns to New Orleans to find the missing Hayley. Someone attacked her, and no one has heard from her. He visits Freya and they briefly catch up before she tells him he can't stay long. He is not interested in staying long; only until Hayley is found.
But the conversation is cut short when the flowers start dying. Hope learns her father is in the house and rushes to go see him. He hears her coming and speeds out of there before she can see him, leaving Freya in the room alone.
Freya and Vincent meet up later. She warns him about Klaus being in town, which he is not pleased about. They talk about her leaving, and how he should go see the seer Ivy. She does this mostly to play matchmaker. Their friendship is honestly beautiful. Freya resting her chin on his hand, and he lamenting on how much he'll miss her. Give us more of this!
Or more of Freya and Keelin! They're getting ready to leave New Orleans behind for a new life together. AFTER Hayley is found of course because family is always first. The two of them talk about Hope as well and how her teenage angst reminds Freya of how she killed birds and burned villages to the ground.
Aunt Dahlia had her hands full with that one.
Marcel returns to New Orleans as well after getting dumped by Rebekah. He tries to become king again, but Josh tells him the vampires don't see him as an equal anymore since he became The Beast (the super enhanced Original).
Before Marcel can defend himself, he notices Klaus' arrival and excuses himself to meet him outside. They are happy to see each other again, but Marcel warns him that he can't stay long. because he's not supposed to get near each other.
They catch up on Hayley's disappearance and Marcel decides to help in the search because her absence will affect how the Crescent wolves will handle the hybrid. While Marcel confronts the wolves, Klaus visits Hayley's human boyfriend.
Marcel and Josh lead the charge in the bayou for Henry. They believe he needs to answer for what he did to one of their vampires, but he will not be killed. Marcel holds true to his rule about not harming kids. He wants to only bury him for a few years and then he will join his army, treated like any other vampire.
The wolves agree to this because the alternative is a fight that they cannot win. So, Marcel and Josh take Henry to see if he had anything to do with Hayley's disappearance. He doesn't talk, but once they learn why he's not talking, they discover Hope is the one responsible for Hayley's disappearance.
WHAT?! I'M SCREAMING!
Meanwhile, Hope finds her vampire crush Roman on the balcony. She is nervous around him and shyly invites him inside. As a vampire though, he needs a clear invitation, and those two get too close once he walks inside. Hope wonders how he found her house, and he tells her he broke into Alaric's office for her school records.
Roman showed up to pay his respects to Henry, the werewolf boy who turned hybrid. He and his friends bullied the kid, and he feels guilty about it. This forces Hope to tell him about Henry's status and that he shouldn't believe everything Lizzie Saltzman says.
LIZZIE SALTZMAN. I love how they all know each other. I can only imagine how they would all interact with each other at school. She and her sister are confirmed to appear later in the season, so I'm excited to see how the children get along with each other.
When Hope, still in her PJs, tells Roman to turn around so she can change. He gets a glimpse in the mirror and looks the other way. Those two are too cute. I hope Klaus doesn't kill him like he did with Rebekah's previous boyfriends. Oh jeez the horror once he finds out about those two.
Back to the search for Hayley, Klaus quickly starts getting off-topic talking to human boyfriend Declan. Klaus hates how Declan knows more about Hope than he does. Not knowing any better, Declan starts belittling Klaus on his lack of involvement in his daughter's life. This is when Klaus plans to murder him.
Hope interferes and uses her magic to get her father to back off. Klaus calms down and compels the man to forget everything. Hope tries to talk to her father, but he is not willing because the Hollow starts whispering in their heads. Snakes come to life and all that other awful also happens. He leaves once again.
Feeling defeated again, Hope returns home to find Roman still there. He is looking through everything, including AURORA! The show has not forgotten about her, but they have no idea what to do with her. The rest of the Mikaelsons didn't know either, so they just kept her around? Is this foreshadowing on her return for the final season?
Roman wonders why she lives in such a strange house, which prompts Hope to reveal she is not Hope Marshall, but rather Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson. Then she talks about never being kissed before, and he starts brushing her hair from her face. The moment is interrupted when Klaus starts calling out for her.
She begs him to leave because Klaus is murderous and will likely kill him for being here. He obeys and gets the hell out of there. Klaus is furious for what Hope did to her mother! Marcel and Josh told him what Hope did.
Like damn! What Hope did to Hayley set the scale for teenage rebellion: using one of your sires to kidnap her and then using a cloaking spell to hide her in a coffin. I understand she wished to see her father again, but doing something that horrific to your mother is simply unacceptable!
Hope claimed she learned from the best - having read up on Cami's memoirs on Klaus. I love the callbacks to season one of this show. There is another big callback as well, but we'll get to that once we discuss how this fight between Klaus and Hope was a long time coming for them.
Klaus uses that vampire trick to read her mind and discovers Hayley's location. He goes to retrieve her, saying he'll talk to Hayley about taking it easier on her, but Hope refuses to let him leave, shutting the doors.
She is furious with him for the past five years. He stopped writing, calling, and altogether cut off communication until now. Klaus reveals he stopped because Hope witnessed him being a monster. He knew the letters and phone calls were not enough, and if he continued them, she would always expect more down the line.
Klaus also hated the way Hope looked at him when she saw all the blood. Hope goes off on him, saying she was only nine years old, and waited for an explanation or an apology for what he did, but it never came. She struggled to see which version of him was real: the one who taught her how to paint during season four or the monster everyone at school talked about.
Then he calls her "broken" because of his love for her. She may not be broken, but she might've broke after hearing that. Their confrontation ends on a sad note, my heart torn between them both. She allows her father to leave and doesn't care if he comes back.
Klaus and Freya go retrieve Hayley at the church, but they do not find her. Only blood and a broken coffin remained. WHO TOOK HAYLEY THIS TIME?! She's definitely going to be the causality of the final season. I don't think she's going to survive this.
Nobody seems to be a fan of Hope Mikaelson.
Ivy warns Vincent about Sabine's warning about her back in season one. This is the other callback I mentioned earlier. Remember when Hayley tried to learn the sex of the baby, and Sabine gives her a strong warning about Hope being everyone's downfall? Yes, that's still relevant.
Josh is also worried about Hope after what she made Henry do to Hayley. He is fighting Marcel on leadership... that vampire has come a long way from being Klaus' spy during the first season. But Marcel wants to protect Hope because they're sort of siblings - family.
Hope goes visit Marcel while he is burying Henry in the Garden. She uses her sire bond to calm him down until he can safely desiccate. After he is buried, the siblings have a heart to heart about what her family did for her during the season four finale. She believes she failed her father, thinking herself unworthy of the sacrifice they made for her.
Marcel assures her that Klaus loves her no matter what. He is too sweet on her. These new familial relationships and their dynamics are so wonderful. I'm going to miss this show so much. It's gonna hurt once we reach episode 13.
Klaus tells Hope about her mother's REAL disappearance. She naturally panics and pukes... out a freaking snake! The closeness between Klaus and Hope is worsening things. He tells Hope to return to Mystic Falls because he made arrangements with Alaric already. Klaus plans to stay in New Orleans until Hayley is found. He tells his daughter he loves her and leaves the house.
Hayley's continued disappearance puts things in perspective for Freya. She doesn't want Keelin tendered to her and the Mikaelson Family. Freya can't love her family and Keelin at the same time so they break up! NOOOOOO! Keelin will be back... right?
In the final scene of the episode, Hope and Roman plan to drive back to Mystic Falls together. Yay! He stuck around for her. But their plans are derailed when they found Henry hung and dead. Someone took him out of the garden and murdered him! Probably the same person who took Hayley as well!
What is going on here?! I am loving this!
Klaus and his daughter's reunion was an important aspect to explore before things escalated further. It established their dynamic and how they've been shaped by their separation. This episode was another strong one going into season five. Keep it up with the suspense and all the dark things to come!
Next week we're getting an Elijah-centric episode! Yes let's get going!
