Marvel’s Agents of Shield 5x18 "All Roads Lead..." Episode Review
This hour went dark really fast. I opened this episode thinking I would catch a few Captain America references whenever Ruby got into that chamber, but boy was I wrong?! Horrible things happened to both our heroes and villains.
Oh, and Deke has a special lemon for Daisy.
Spoilers ahead:
Talbot is on a mission. He is programmed to kidnap Robin, the child who can see the future. He becomes creepy as hell once Robin and his mother catch him snooping in their room. Talbot tries to play it off using his tortured mind and how much he missed his son. I mean, he's not 100% lying, but Robin's mother knows something isn't right.
He attacks her, which makes her beg her daughter to run. She stays put though because she knows Talbot is supposed to kidnap her. Wow she predicted her own kidnapping. No wonder the kid is all messed up in the head.
Coulson and Mack notice Talbot's strange behavior and discover his intentions for the young seer. Talbot panics when Coulson reveals he's under Hydra's programming. He lets Robin go but doesn't trust himself to keep his family or friends safe. He turns the gun on himself. Here I thought it was end of an era for Talbot. He had a good run during the past five seasons.
But luckily he does not kill himself. Mack shoots him using an ICER. I thought he was dead at first, but I rewatched the scene and it certainly was non-lethal.
Fun notes in the love department while we're on the subject. Deke asks the two of them before the Talbot confrontation about how to woo a woman. He is in love with Daisy and wants her to like him back. Mack and Coulson have no useful tips: Yo-Yo locked him in a cell and Coulson is incapable of expressing feelings for May. He goes with leaving a lemon on her bunk bed.
They think it's solid and I want to see that method play out.
Back to the danger. Ruby is forcing FitzSimmons to repair the chamber they destroyed last week. They warn her about the consequences, but Ruby refuses to listen. I wish she did because the outcome is not pretty for her. Eventually it is repaired, and she gets ready to enter.
Von Strucker helps her in, and as a reward, she gives him a well-earned kiss. She really strung him along for this moment. Getting Captain American vibes seeing Ruby inside the chamber, FitzSimmons prepare for the literal worst. We saw what happened when Creel merely touched the Gravitonium. So having the stuff get absorbed into your body must be so much worse.
Fitz activates the machine. Only 8% of the Gravitonium gets inside Ruby's body before she begs for them to turn it off. Now the voices of Whitehall and Quinn are fighting inside her head. She levitates in the air for a brief second before falling into total madness. The Gravitonium also gave her a weird power to crush people's heads. She did this to Von Strucker who was only trying to help her.
Ruby regrets everything she did and begs for help. Daisy, May, and her mother Hale come to the rescue. Yo-Yo also shows up. Hale tries to reason with her daughter, keeping a safe distance, and they are trying to keep calm. When FitzSimmons tell her they cannot reverse it, Ruby angrily pins them to the wall using her mind for a minute.
Hale and Ruby have a intense heart to heart about how much they mean to each other and that they can get through this. Dove Cameron poured her heart out in this scene. Ruby even admits to Daisy she was her hero and how they ended up was not her original goal in the slightlest. Wow I wish Daisy and Ruby had more scenes together. I expected more out of this rivalry.
Daisy is more than willing to help her and recruit her to SHIELD. Yes I think that is excellent idea. I mentioned this in last week's review, and hoped Dove Cameron would find a way to keep going next season. Let's say when Yo-Yo slit Ruby's throat using super speed, I was more furious than Daisy. Everyone was stunned at her actions.
I thought Yo-Yo believed in the future being fixed, the Invincible Three. So when she declared she saved the world from the Destroyer of Worlds, this threw me off. I guess Yo-Yo is only believing in one part of the future where she survives, but that doesn't work either. This makes me think Yo-Yo is going mad, just like her future self.
My opinion is that Yo-Yo cemented the future. In the closing moments, Hale decides to join forces with the Alien Invaders, who want the Gravitonium for themselves. She doesn't care about anything now that her daughter is dead.
Great job on "saving the world", Yo-Yo. Good luck explaining this to Mack.
Losing Dove Cameron is a mistake because she was a great addition to Agents of Shield. I saw immense potential in her character and thought it would build up to another fight with Daisy Johnson. Hell when her body began levitating in the air, I thought she was coming back to life, but nope! It was a trick! What a waste of a fantastic character.
Her death did set a lot of things off, but they could've figured out other ways to do that without getting her killed. Right?
Overall, a solid episode with a major death that propelled the plot toward the alien invasion not lead by Thanos. How are the two not connected? Thanos is invading Earth on April 27th - Avengers Infinity War get hype!! Other Alien People are invading Earth but it's unrelated to the movie franchise. Interesting that they're not getting in each other's ways.
