Grey's Anatomy 14x19 "Beautiful Dreamer" Episode Review
After 14 seasons of this show, I'm surprised at how much story they can still pull off. I'm in awe that this show can keep generating new ideas for our characters and for the amount of heartache the audience can take season after season, episode after episode. I was not the least bit invested in the relationship between DeLuca and Bello during its short run but this episode got me feeling for them... How Shonda? How did you make me care about them so much in only this episode?
Find out what I mean in my review. Spoilers ahead:
The Bello-DeLuca relationship bloomed. They held hands in the hallways, decided to live with each other, and everything seemed right in the world... then an ICE agent named Fields arrived to ruin everything. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requested to see Sam Bello, not willing to give any more information about it to Meredith or Bailey.
Sam Bello wants to run immediately because this happened to her friend, who ended up in Mexico with nothing. Bello is a Dreamer. She has DACA status and she's lived in the United States since she was a year old with the rest of her family. Meredith and Bailey try to help her the best way they can: Bailey stalls Agent Fields in her office and Meredith comes up with some silly plans to keep her in the country.
Meredith comes up with the obvious solution: marriage. She brings in DeLuca to an empty OR room with her and Bello. When she tells to get married, she watches in horror as the couple talk about the possibility and if they are in the right place for it. Meredith's facial expressions spoke for all of us watching those two awkwardly talk it through. This is one of the best moments of the episode when it came to the humor. Bello shots down the plan anyway... marriage wouldn't change her status.
The next out-of-nowhere plan? Meredith talks to Alex about his dad's drug dealer connections, which he obviously doesn't have. I cannot believe how silly this kept getting. Then Alex gets Jo involved, where she suggests faking Bello's death. Excuse me? Apparently Jo has a corpse guy who can do this for her. It was her Plan B if changing her name and switching States didn't pan out. I'm glad Plan A worked out for Jo Wilson.
But Bello refuses to start over with a different name after all the hard work she put in at college and the residency program. DeLuca circles back to running away, but Meredith warns her if she runs, she can't practice medicine. She'll be a criminal.
Once the doctors learn why Bello is being questioned: she ran a red light and they got it on video, and that she was getting deported, they needed to figure out a plan fast. Bello ran it one night after a long shift at the hospital and hit the gas pedal when it turned yellow. She had no idea it turned red when she ran it.
I have to pause and talk about this. Running a red light equals getting deported if you're not a citizen? I was shocked to find out that was the reason they wanted her out of the country. It blew my mind that this happened in the real world. Hell I've been guilty of running a couple yellow-red lights during my lifetime. I'm sure a lot of us naturally-born citizens have done so too... it's mind boggling.
Finally, Meredith landed on a solid plan to save Bello and to help her continue her studies. She got her a plane ticket to Zurich where Cristina is waiting for her. I absolutely love how they incorporated Cristina into this!! "Dr. Yang is expecting you"... yes Cristina to the rescue!!
Sam left that night. DeLuca offered to go with her, but she refused to ruin his life for her. Of course it's raining as they bid each other farewell and said their "I love yous". Sam breaks down in the car and so do the rest of us, feeling the emotional heartbreak for the two of them.
Elsewhere, Bailey tells Agent Fields to wait until Bello gets out of "surgery" and notices he has physical symptoms related to heart problems. Agent Fields ignores her at first, thinking she was stalling for Bello, but eventually he gives in and gets checked out. Turns out he had an urgent medical problem and Maggie Pierce needed to operate. They successfully saved his life, and he is thankful for Bailey's help, telling her what she needed to know before calling in another agent for Bello.
Other sad moments in the episode. Yes there's enough heartbreak to go around.
Richard Webber spent his time seeing his old sponsor Ollie die right in front of him. Has the man been tortured enough?! Another piece of my heart goes out to him.
Kimmie, the singing patient, leaves the hospital to live out her life, not willing to wait around for a cure that might not come. Alex begs her to stay and to keep fighting, but she is done fighting and wants to see Broadway. In the end, they leave without Alex's permission.
Jo is the one who tells him that Kimmie bailed, and he is upset over it. This leads to a super sweet moment between them. She is excited to have kids with him. Yes! She's finally onboard to have his children. And she wants his last name. The last name of someone who loves her! Awwwwww! Jo Karev! I ship them so much. Please don't sink...
Amelia tries to get in touch with a Dr. Rebecca Froy who may help with their Kimmie problem, but that doctor keeps hanging up on her. She has a problem with Harper Avery, a legal problem she cannot discuss because legal reasons. Amelia brings in Jackson on the next conference call to help straighten this out, but she once again hangs up on them. How rude!
Jackson goes to his mother, who is here supporting Richard, about the Froy problem but she claims it's about some old research he shouldn't have to worry about. Thinking it would have no consequences, Jackson ends up talking to some lawyers to release Froy from her legal issues with Harper Avery and the dramatic ominous music begins. Catherine Avery left out something important about Rebecca Froy, one that will "ruin them all" she tells Richard.
Maggie has an issue with Jackson lying to her about April kissing him in the supply room a couple episodes back. But after seeing DeLuca broken after his farewell with Sam, she makes up with him because some people like Bello and DeLuca can't be together and that's sad.
Matthew comes back too in this episode. His baby is sick to her stomach and Arizona checks on her, who is still regretful about letting his wife die on her watch. She offers to have a different doctor look at the baby, and he appreciates that. April follows him around and makes suggestions that saves the baby. Afterwards, April and Matthew share a quiet moment praying.
This story involving Matthew and his child also inspires Owen to finally go for what he wants: a child of his own! Yes! He is taking control of his own life. I'm loving this. The writers haven't ran out of ideas for Owen just yet!
I enjoyed this episode and the emotional stakes involved in each story told. It's sad to see Sam Bello go. She literally showed up not that long ago, but the actress had other obligations. One of the strongest episodes this season, and I'm looking forward to next week's to see the fallout of Jackson's decision regarding Rebecca Froy.
Comment below to share your thoughts on the episode. Or if you want to cry, I'd be down for that too. Thanks for reading and if you watch Station 19 too, my review will be up shortly after this one!
