Supernatural 14x06 "Optimism" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please Read with Caution.
A lot of these season 14 episodes have been “fun” lately and the newest one is no exception. The stories are split between the Winchesters: Sam and Charlie 2.0 take on a case while Jack convinces Dean to go on a hunt with him. Out of the two, the Jack-Dean story is way more amusing and filled with a lot of charm. I was laughing a good amount at Jack’s innocence and his first “romance” with a girl.
Let’s start with Sam and Charlie 2.0’s side of the story.
It’s weird. The two of them are stuck in a car for a good amount of their screentime: Sam plays with a fidget spinner while Charlie 2.0 hits the books for research. This is the weird part… Sam is not doing the research and goofing off with a toy. That’s more Dean’s MO to mess around. We also learn more about Charlie 2.0 and how she craves her own identity.
She insists on being compared to the original Charlie, which is understandable. Everyone is their own person including doppelgangers. We learn this Charlie had a great love named Kara, who she lost in the Angel War. This is heartbreaking to say the least. It’s also the reason she wants to quit hunting and move to a mountain with great WIFI.
After they deal with the bug-demon thing (wow this show sometimes), Sam tries to convince Charlie 2.0 to not quit hunting through some lame metaphor, and it works. Charlie 2.0 realizes that society is not hopeless and decides to stay with people who understand her.
Jack and Dean travel to a local diner for clues to their case. This is where the entertainment starts. The small town who knows everyone and are more than willing to talk about it. Jack learns more about “courting” and how it comes before dating. Then the sex talk starts to happen, and Dean is totally not prepared to have “The Talk” with Jack.
Harper is the craziest romantic ever. She gets Jack to leave the library to get him a book… THE LIBRARY! We soon learn she is the culprit… A necromancer who killed her boyfriend and then rose him from the dead. Before that, Jack tries to ID her as a demon and even uses the “cristo” method. Damn! We haven’t gotten that since it’s intro in season one “Phantom Traveler”.
The Jack-Dean dynamic is something we didn’t know we wanted. Jack delivered the line about needing to know about sex was perfect after he was lead to believe Harper loved him. I hope she comes back in a future episode. The love letter she wrote for Jack was incredibly creepy and threatening not to have the show find its way back to her.
What a fun episode that ends on a dark note. Jack’s illness continues throughout the episode until he bleeds and faints. Maybe his powers will come back soon? Where is Castiel?!
