unOrdinary “Monster Arc” (Episode 51 through Episode 58) Webtoon Review
Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.
The “Monster Arc” was the arc we’ve all been waiting for.
John and Arlo finally confront each other on the battlefield, and we learned what John’s ability was. Before we dive into that though, let’s talk about Seraphina first and how she stood up for herself.
In Episode 51, Seraphina had enough of her mother controlling her and decided to take control of her life, not wanting to be perfect anymore. Seraphina actually put her mother in her place, and it was the most satisfying thing to happen on the show so far in terms of Seraphina’s character development. This was an interesting kickoff to the “Monster Arc” indeed.
Episode 52 followed up with the side-characters—Remi, Islen, and Blyke—after their adventure at the Kovoro Mall. There wasn’t much to report other than the headmaster being concern about EMBER. The episode did end with John and Arlo hanging out after school though, which lead to an ambush.
Episodes 53 through 56 explored John getting seriously jumped by Arlo and two other students—Ventus and Meili—on the Turf War grounds. Once John was down, Arlo explained how he caused Seraphina’s suspension and feigned a friendship with John in order to put him in his place. This betrayal caused John to unleash his anger on them all.
John’s ability is copycat—he can mimic other powers. The artwork of the fight scene was done really well, and John’s design was sharpened to reflect the darkness he was channeling. Also, all the powers John mimicked were also blackened to show the distinct differences between him and his opponents’ powers.
Even Arlo—the King of Wellston Private High School—didn’t stand a chance once John copied his Barrier powers. I was having a good time watching John slaughter them and his internal turmoil about being betrayed yet again by someone he thought he could trust. All the build-up was for this fight, and the payoff was astounding. It was definitely worth the wait. The people who read this weekly might feel differently, but… I get that frustration.
Episode 57 and 58 focused on the aftermath. Arlo called Elaine to heal them, and Seraphina was reunited with John at the worst possible time. Arlo swore Elaine to secrecy about what happened to him and the other two students. After Elaine healed all three, Seraphina called Elaine to heal John. Elaine’s role in the aftermath was pretty impressive because she was the only one who could put two-and-two together. Honestly, I’m pretty scared for John and Seraphina’s friendship. Seraphina was left in the dark about John’s truth, and keeping secrets never bolded well for anyone.
I really felt bad for Elaine during this arc. She deserved better than to be used by Arlo, Seraphina, and John. Seraphina’s response to John having powers… I’m honestly not sure how she’ll actually react to the news when she eventually learns it. I just hope it doesn’t break the friendship. The “Aftermath Arc” is going to be so good.
