Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 3 "And to the Digital World" Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.
Before I dive into my thoughts on episode 3, I think I need to grieve. Toei Animations had announced that they are suspending future episodes on the Digimon reboot due to the coronavirus pandemic. This was devastating to hear as the series was about to take off into familiar territory and get the story rolling with the other Chosen Children. The cliffhanger at the end of the episode is worse as a result. We have to wait an unknown amount of time for episode 4 now.
The first 3 episodes were pretty fantastic too. They were set-up as a three-part arc that paid homage to the Digimon Adventure: Our War Game. The beginning of episode 3 swiftly executed an amazing fight scene between Omnimon and Argomon that ended the threat on Tokyo. While Omnimon’s introduction into the main series may have seemed early, at least his exit was just as quick. After that part ended, the rest of the episode centered around Tai and Izzy getting ready for… SUMMER CAMP!
Matt, TK, and Joe cameoed throughout the episode. Then came Sora, who actually interacted with Tai and Izzy at summer camp. Sora was set-up as the next Chosen Child ready to jump on the adventure, and based on episode 4’s preview, we were going to get her paired with Biyomon too. Damn you, coronavirus! Killing our hopes and dreams. The summer camp was downplayed compared to the original series, but I think that’s okay.
Kari and Tai’s brief conversation before he left for summer camp also foreshadowed Kari’s future involvement in the series as she knows—on some level—about the Digimon. Similar to the original series, but it was brought to our attention much earlier.
Overall, I enjoyed this episode very much. Sora’s character was introduced without her classic hat, but her history with Tai was hinted at. Tai and Agumon reunited in the Digital World by episode’s end. I’m excited for the next episode, but who knows when we’ll get it. I’ll see you next time, Digi-Destined (Chosen Children, whichever term you’re cool with)!
