The Dragon Prince Netflix Original Season 2 Review
Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with caution.
The second season was honestly nonstop on the action, and getting our characters where they needed to go in nine episodes. I’m going to say this right now. The major issue with this season is the same as last season… NOT ENOUGH EPISODES! We need more than nine… Yes, the children’s adventure has evolved into all out fantasy with elemental magic, complex characters getting more complex, and lots of other Game of Thrones stuff. As a person well-versed in web accessibility though, I did appreciate deaf Amaya and the blind pirate’s usage in the story.
The flashback arc with Viren and King Harrow also pushed this idea further by introducing same-sex couple who run a kingdom, and how King Harrow’s wife, Queen Sarai, was always his closest adviser because she asked him the tough questions about “monsters”. The great message behind her line of reasoning and how it isn’t a permanent solution to their problems is a powerful one.
Let’s talk about the kid’s adventure, the original purpose of this show.
Ezran is trying to teach Zym how to fly, Callum is trying to find another way to do magic, and Rayla is enjoying her two hands but questioning what her life purpose is. These are the basic motives for the current season beside the journey to Xadia. Once you add in Soren and Claudia with the news of their father’s passing does the storytelling deliver that emotional-gut punch meant for the heart.
Overall, the action sequences look so much better. I’m pretty sure the show fixed their animation or paid more attention to it. Either way, watching the series’s animation wasn’t a distraction but an enhancement to the experience… how it should’ve been from the start. The Avatar humor is endless with every word that comes out of Soren’s mouth, his dynamic with Claudia, and how he was tasked with killing his friends.
I’d recommend this show 100%. Hopefully, season three gets more episodes. The nine-episode seasons are not enough to satisfy me.
