Supergirl 3x17 "Trinity" Episode Review
All the World Killers have assembled! They are together and bring Hell to Earth. I went into this episode waiting to see how Kara would react to Lena's secret but so much more went down alongside that aftermath. We got to see Guardian, Mon-El and his love for two women, and Winn made something special for Alex!!
It's pretty cool. But let's get into the episode review before I say any more here.
Spoilers ahead:
The episode picks up directly from last week's cliffhanger, Lena is being questioned at the DEO about her research on Reign. She does not admit to doing anything wrong but reveals everything she did over the past three weeks.
Sam is Reign and to keep her under control, Lena utilized Kryptonite she got from her brother Lex's secret stash. Kara is betrayed to hear her friend has something that can kill her without her knowing. Lena also reveals all this to James over a phone call.
This is where I had a problem. Having Kryptonite around is a smart tactic! It's like we're back at the beginning of season two where Clark and J'onn had a feud about keeping Kryptonite in the DEO. There are evil Kryptonians flying around on this Earth and the humans need to have something ready to use against them.
I may sound like Lex Luthor right now, but it's true. Supergirl went evil at one point in this show and Superman got brainwashed two season finales in a row, we need Kryptonite!
That issue is the B-plot of the episode. Kara asks James to go into Lena's lab as Guardian and to check if she had any more hidden. Lena claims she used up all of it, but Supergirl is not trusting her at the moment. James reluctantly agrees and enlists Winn's help.
Guardian is able to get inside and has some device ready to break open the vault, but he chooses not to open it. He tells Winn he did open it though and found no Kryptonite in there. He is protecting his girlfriend and her privacy.
My mind went directly to, "watch the vault have Kryptonite inside because I know it has to play a role later or something". I was sort of right, but more on that later.
The A-plot of the episode. Frankly, I should've started there first, but I was already on the rant about Kryptonite and how every human needs to have one ready in case evil Kryptonians start attacking National City again.
The World Killers have started a magical ritual to create a solar eclipse and to end all life on Earth. This is considered "magic", which is the first time I'm hearing about this because I assumed this was all science and so did the rest of the main cast.
Lena looked baffled when Kara described the solar eclipse as a magic ritual.
This eclipse is weakening Kara because no more yellow sun and she somehow slips into the pocket dimension where Sam and the other humans go to when their World Killer counterparts take over their bodies.
When Lena confirms this pocket dimension as a real place, the DEO tasks Brainy to get the job done. He declares the task as "fun" and gets on it using future technology similar to the thing he did to enter Kara's consciousness.
Brainy hooks up Kara, Lena, and Alex so they can all travel there together. Before leaving though, Kara makes Mon-El promise her that he will pull Lena and Alex out before her. He agrees, but it is a promise he has a hard time keeping.
This leads to a friendship moment with J'onn. Their friendship is so underrated. Mon-El reveals to J'onn that he feels helpless seeing her weakened and doesn't want to hurt his wife, confirming his feelings for Kara are back! Not surprised but it was about time he admitted to it.
Saturn Girl plays a minor role in this episode for the record. I'm disappointed she didn't get screentime because her thing about killing the World Killers turned out to be right.
Kara, Lena, and Alex arrive in the Valley (pocket dimension's name). Alex creates fighting sticks for them because they might face monsters. Lena believes they can't get hurt until Alex pokes her with a stick. It hurts and so the pain is real.
They find Grace (Pestilence's evil human side) dead on the ground and hurry off to find Sam and Julia before they join her.
Sam and Julia are barely hanging on. They are losing themselves to the guilty and start forgetting things about their former lives. Sam is trying to keep Julia together but panics when she realizes she forgot her daughter's name.
The rescue team start arguing with each other because trust issues. Kara is still hurt about Lena's secret, but when Lena asks Supergirl to reveal her real name, the Valley goes quiet. For the record, I hate Kara for not telling Lena she's Supergirl.
I hate Lena even more for not figuring it out already. She's like the smartest person on this show, and she can't put together that Kara Danvers and Supergirl are the same.
This secret brings Smallville vibes because Clark keeping Lex out of the loop is what led to their friendship falling apart.
But after encountering some Kryptonite demons, they find Sam and Julia. The two of them are nearly lost. Alex, Kara, and Lena speak to Sam and use her daughter's name to get through to her, letting her take control back from Reign.
Sam is able to stop the ritual and send out a distress signal from the Fortress of Sanctuary to let the DEO know where they are. Unfortunately, this also means Reign is back in the Valley and starts to choke Lena.
Luckily, the team pulls them all out before Reign can do serious damage. Everyone gets ready to confront the World Killers, including Alex who gets a new suit.
Winn designed her a new suit to combat aliens and a new gun. Alex got geeky about it and went to the bathroom to change before the battle. That was adorable.
Lena stays behind and manages to pilot the Legion ship (31st century technology at its finest).
The Superfriends face off against the Trinity and split off:
Supergirl and Alex vs Reign (who got control back from Sam).
Saturn Girl and Mon-El vs Pestilence
Martian Manhunter vs Purity.
Everyone is getting their asses handed to them. It took Supergirl to convince Purity/Julia to turn against the World Killers to change the tide of the battle. Purity and Pestilence fight each other and end up killing each other.
When Saturn Girl declared the future to be saved, I knew it wasn't true. The World Killers' spirits got absorbed into Reign, who flew out of the collapsing Fortress. Everyone else escaped too. I thought Reign was gonna transform into Blight and reveal she was the true World Killer all along.
There's still time to see if that will happen.
Mon-El and Saturn Girl are ready to return to the future, thinking Blight is defeated and their loved ones are saved. But Mon-El looks at Kara's necklace and thinks about staying in this time to reunite with Kara. Let's send him back.
Kara, hearing about the lack of Kryptonite in Lena's vault, makes amends with her friend and they renew their friendship. I don't think this will last long because of what Lena and James talk about in the end.
First things first, James confesses to Lena he is Guardian. I was thrown. She was too. Then he tells her how he broke into her vault under Supergirl's orders but chose not look inside. He trust her enough to not invade her privacy.
Lena is touched and decides to share something with him. I waited to hear her confess about the Kryptonite being in the vault but got an even bigger bombshell. She didn't get the Kryptonite from Lex's leftover stash after all. She found a way to create it.
GAME CHANGER!
Will James tell Supergirl about this unexpected twist?
OH. Reign is getting ready to kill Ruby because it is Sam's last connection to her humanity, and she can't afford to lose control again. Somebody help that poor woman!
What are we thinking about tonight's episode? I didn't like two World Killers getting killed off to boost up Reign. I saw immense potential in Pestilence and they threw it away. They did all this build up to put the killers together, and then they die.
It's disappointing.
