Supergirl 3x15 "In Search of Lost Time" Episode Review
Hey y'all! I don't know what's going on with Supergirl, but their stand alone episodes are outstanding. The plot with the Worldkillers is on pause like last week's episode, except for the part where Lena discovered Sam is Reign and holding her somewhere.
Supergirl's newest episode primarily centers around J'onn and his father M'yrnn. Kara and Mon-El's relationship is addressed too in this episode.
Spoilers Ahead:
The episode opened with another fun night with the Superfriends. They hang out a lot and work together too. That is some real friendship there. Not even Team Flash does that as often as these guys. Kara carefully removing her shirt was the moment I went, "they're going for the funny"...
This episode and last week's are trying something different with Supergirl. I think they're taking notes from The Flash in the light heartedness department. That's what they must've done during their long hiatus. I mean the fight scene in the bar was also on the light side especially with the photobooth and how Kara posed midfight.
Moving along here:
Kara and Mon-El are training again. This time Mon-El is the teacher and Kara is the student. Mon-El teaches Kara how to use her cape more effectively. For the past three seasons, she had no idea her cape could be used as a weapon. Now, she wants to learn in order to defeat Reign.
During their training sessions, there is clear tension between the two former lovebirds because they never formally talked about what happened between them at the end of season two. She is holding resentment, regret, and anger at him and herself.
This all comes out in the open when M'yrnn accidentally unleashes psychic disturbances throughout the DEO. Luckily, Winn, Alex, and Kara are wearing anti-psychic devices once this happens a second time. Mon-El's legion ring protects him as well. If the ring protects him, there goes my theory that Saturn Girl was controlling his mind the entire time to get them married.
Winn fights off some tech guy and someone from HR who he has a bad history with. That scene came out of nowhere. There is definitely a story there with Winn and the woman from HR. Please tell it to us someday, Supergirl.
Alex beats the crap out of all the DEO agents who are under the psychic thrall. She is literally here to kick butt, and I do not mind in the slightest. Her character needs to blow off some steam. I miss her and Maggie. This is out of nowhere, but I do miss Maggie.
J'onn does not want to depower his father because his mind was the only thing keeping him alive for the past 300 years. He does not want to take away his father's dignity. This a powerful scene and a tear-jerker. Alex brings up a story about her grandmother and how her mother had to treat her like a child when she endangered others.
But Kara... when she brought up Uncle Jor-El (Superman's dad) and his speech about 'the Father becoming the son, and the son becoming the father", I knew it was the one that got through to J'onn. And I was right.
J'onn used Kara's advice to convince his father to submit and to depower him. He relents and the depower cuff is put on, restoring order back to the DEO. M'yrnn apologizes to everyone and accepts he needs help to protect what he has left. Please don't let Martian Dad-Hunter die. J'onn can't take losing his father again.
Kara and Mon-El also talk about their relationship and the bad selfish person he used to be. She admits to him that she romanticized their love when he was gone and didn't think about all the times he disrespected her. They made amends and are back on the path of starting over... as friends I think?
I'm glad they talked about this because it was a long time coming. I'm not a big fan of their romance, but it's there, and I'm dealing.
What a powerful emotional-driven episode!
Wait! There's more in the Worldkiller department!
Lena is holding Sam for observation. Sam is not convinced she is Reign and demands to see her daughter. This is where Lena owns the Luthor name and grills Sam on how bad she is as a mother, saying she'll never see Ruby again. Reign awakens and tries to break out, but Lena shuts her down using a kryptonite necklace.
This is all recorded for Sam to see. When she realized all the awful things she did, the people she's killed, the guilt almost consumed her. Sam begged Lena to help her and to never tell her where Ruby is until there is a cure for her.
Keeping all this a secret will backfire on Lena Luthor. Not just in her relationship with James Olsen, yes that's still a thing, but also her friendship with Kara/Supergirl. The consequences will not be pretty once they discover what Lena did.
I hope this season doesn't end like Season Eight of Smallville. This is all similar to how that show handled Davis Bloome and his alter ego, Doomsday. Sounds familiar? The only difference is that there are more Worldkillers than Doomsday, so the whole redemption thing might not pan out the same.
The episode ends with Kara and Mon-El flying in the sky. They encounter dead pigeons everywhere, which confirms the next Worldkiller is on the move for next week's episode.
Comment and let me know how we're feeling about the latest episode. Thanks for reading up!
