Supergirl 4x05 "Parasite Lost" Episode Review
Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with Caution.
I think episode mostly worked when the superheroes aren’t involved all that much. A weird thing to say about a show called Supergirl, but Kara Danvers and J’onn J’onzz learned how to fight without their superhero alter egos backing them up. They are beginning to branch out on their respective fields and discovering how to help people using their human selves.
Kara tapped into her journalist side and wrote articles on aliens to help better their image. This storyline lead Kara and Nia to Amadei. This encounter and subsequent attack forced Kara to realize that her articles could potentially put a target on the aliens’ backs, which leads me to wonder if she is not reconsidering this realization for her series.
It makes me curious if Kara will “out” herself as an alien and Supergirl. This season is all about pro-alien acceptance / politics, but Kara continues to hide herself. I’m surprised the loaded question hadn’t come up in the show yet, especially with James Olsen publicly known as the vigilante Guardian.
James Olsen’s Alter Ego as Guardian is being used as a symbol for Ben Lockwood’s Children of Liberty. He does not appreciate how his heroism is being warped into something hateful, but Lena wants him to look at the “bigger picture”, which shows that she doesn’t learn the same lesson Kara did in the season premiere.
The story arc of James going undercover in the Children of Liberty was a natural direction. If he couldn’t fix the image of what they did to Guardian, he might as well join them and figure out what they’re up to. I’m excited to see how Guardian will handle Ben when he discovers that he is the leader (Agent Liberty).
J’onn is starting to embrace his role of a private detective. He is becoming a beacon of hope for the alien community. When the police force can’t be trusted, there is nowhere else for them to go and feel safe or helped. This is a good parallel to what’s going on in the world and how scared everyone is getting of the political climate.
Alex and Colonel Haley, her new superior from the government, got along pretty great in this episode. They were focused on the mission of catching Jensen, agreed on almost every tactic performed, and had chemistry… that was, until Colonel Haley revealed she did not like J’onn J’onzz. It was almost anti-alien discrimination the way she spoke about the Martian Manhunter.
This episode had a lot of good points with Kara finally discovering the Children of Liberty’s existence. With this knowledge and James’ intentions to go undercover with them, our heroes are prepared to face off against their biggest enemy yet: chaotic human fear.
Side notes: Nia and Brainy are cute! I can’t wait to see how they develop past the brunch scene. I spotted Nia adjusting her hair when she saw him. I ship them.
